I had better clarified this before I get some static on the solenoids. Not all cars have the solenoid on the starter. Not sure what Ford uses now, but for a long time they had their solenoid mounted on the wall next to the front fender next to the battery box. The positive cable from the battery is fastened to the solenoid, then another battery cable is run from the solenoid to the starter. When you twist the key to make a start it energizes the solenoid allowing the battery voltage to reach the starter. When you release the key the ignition switch is in the run mode and allows voltage to your ignition to keep your car running. Ford had this same setup back in the 1930's and you could crank and start the car from under the hood as long as you had the ignition switch on. They had a starter button on the underside of the solenoid. I have a 1980 Mercury Cougar XR7 and it will become an antique in 3 months. Hal
