M hydraulic/timing issues

I was having hydraulic issues with my M (it"s a live hydraulic pump off the distributor), so I put a pressure gauge on the hydraulic line and started the tractor and got no pressure.

Then i capped the line just after the gauge, and started the tractor.. it started ran a few seconds.. the gauge went to about 1500psi and the tractor stalled... so i hooked the lines back up properly and now the tractor is very hard to start, and when it DOES run, it sounds like the engine is very loaded down.. it also will shoot embers from the exhaust.. i"ve played with the timing a bit to no avail.

any help would be appreciated, i hope this can be fixed.
