WE always used them to mount spray rigs on. I sprayed 180 ac of corn with the boom mounted on the front. I don't remember how it all connected but I do know we ran the pump off tractor PTO and spraying was really unheard of to kill grass with back in those days. It worked. My grandfather ran a 400ac farm with mules but I always had to do his tractor work with a H or M . He was an oldtimer that was afraid to drive them, but he would pay for them. He ran his mules until the age of 81 years old and passed 2 years after that; what an example.
