Philip: First, if you don't know the serial number, how can you be sure it is a 1948 model. The serial number plate is on the left seat support, on the inside facing the other seat support. As CNKS states tractor and engine serial numbers are the same until 210,000, however that not much good to you as 210,000 is still Farmall A not SA. Even after that period the two numbers are close. My 53 SA is only off by some 2,000. That engine serial number under No.1 plug is on a machined flat surface and numbers are stamped. All other numbers on the block are cast in place. There is one exception to the tractor serial number location. 1954 model Super A1, has tractor serial number on left side of clutch housing. That only applies to 1,957 tractors, from serial number 356001 to 357958.
