Double C, Once you mentally establish the firing order, it is important to establish where #1 is on the distributor. Originally #1 location comming out of the distributor was at between 1 and 2 O"clock. Through the years, however, many a backyard mechanic has compromised that position by removing the distributor. You can verify this by removing the #1 spark plug (closest to the radiator) and turning the engine over until the #1 piston reaches the top in the compression stroke. A finger over the spark plug hole will establlish that. Once that is verified, remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor contact is pointing. If it is at that 1:00 position, then 1342 is correct and wires ran from that point. If, however the rotor is at either 90 or 180 degreed either way from that point, then you can make that location #1 and proceed accordingly. I hope I didn"t make things more complicated than necessary, but I have seen this situation happen many times, and I suppose it is to be expected after 50+ years.
