Running a bushhog, under normal operation, with my 544 diesel hydro, I pushed the speed ratio lever forward as usual, and the tractor engine started to bear down on the tranny, as usual, when the tractor just rocked back and the torque on the engine released. There was no bang or strange sound, as if something violent had happened. At that point I had no forward or reverse hydro. All my other systems are working--PTO, 3 point hitch, remotes, and steering. The local IH service guy says "Bring the tractor in and we'll run tests with gauges." The local tractor guru, who works out of his barn shop and "can tell you instantly what's wrong", asked me if the PTO was OK, then pronounced that I had "blown the charge pump". A multi-state IH dealer who is refered to on these discussion boards a lot, got me to their repair guy with the most hydro experience, and he said "If the power steering runs smooth, it's a stuck high pressure valve (either "forward" or "reverse", results in no movement in either direction"), and if the steering is jerky, it's a bad charge pump. My steering is smooth. Does anyone have any ideas who's right. If it's a valve, can they be rebuilt or must they be purchased complete. How big a job to change them? Can I assume, because it went out as I was trying to go forward, that it's the "forward valve?"
