As much as I really hate to tell you this, you may have gone through alot of trouble for nothing. Most ofg the time when your probelm happens,all you have to do is remove the shifter, take a long screwdriver or the like and line the shifter rails back up.The end of the shifter gets worn and will slip out of the groove in the rails. BUT if you do have some internal problems, then pulling the top is the only answer.Only thing I can think of right off hand is the bolt(s) that hold the brake covers on.
