Jim, according to the manual, a 886 with a 358 running at rated speed full load has a "normal expected" EGT range of 1020-1220 degrees F. Where it falls in this range depends on several factors, including ambient temp and elevation above sea level. EGT will go up 2 degrees for every 1 degree increase in ambient temp, and will go up 20 degrees per 1000-foot increase in elevation above sea level. The manual says to run the engine at rated speed full load on a hot day, note what the pyro reads, and set the alarm 100 degrees above this temp (your pyro probably has a pointer that can be adjusted to indicate max EGT). The manual goes on to say to never exceed 1420 degrees, as this will crack the head. It also says that a hot engine should be idled until the EGT cools to 550 degrees before it is shut down.
