How to clean tank

What type of cleaner is good to clean out the gas tank? I have heard I need an acid based cleaner but I'm not sure what type. Also heard something about putting some old bolts and washers in with some cleaner and shaking it up.
I think I read this on a post here a few weeks back but can't remember. UHHHHH! what were we talking about again.?
