NewtoRed, In the Ontario winters I have experienced we often get -27C in cold snaps. I have a small diesel I use almost daily. I recieved a magnetic block heater from my kids for Christmas one year, I stick it on the oil pan and go and do the chores, when I come back in 45 minutes or so the tractor will fire right up( I use the glow plugs for about 20 seconds). The heater is a handy little gaget from TSC. I use 30 oil in this tractor. The 584 starts without heater, ether etc without fail and I run 15-40 in it for the winter. I blow a lot of snow and the blower can put it on its knees at times, haven't had any problem with multi grade oil. I don't disagree with the other responses, what works for those guys is great, if I had room in the barn with the cattle I'd keep it in there, because it does stay warm. I do have a can of ether, but I haven't used it in a long time...just as well. I find that keeping the battery well charged helps a great deal. I sometimes put a trickle charge on just to ensure full charge. Often the tractor is started and run for a short time and it doesn't get over the drain of glow plugs and starter., thus you get a full 12 volt blast on the glow plugs and a faster turn over of the engine which makes starting all the easier. Sometimes we get fooled when we think batteries are doing their job and they aren't. My neighbour was having starting problems with his 1830 JD, it turned over but just didn't want to start. He decided to put new batteries in it and lo and behold it will fire right up..just was turning over too slowly. Anyway in short , a block heater for an hour will usually fire up a diesel, multi grade oils help( I use a multi grade diesel blend 15-40) I like the magnetic heater as I can use it for other vehicles if we get a cold snap...good luck with your new tractor...Mike in Exeter Ontario
