If you are concerned about over charging, connect a digital voltmeter to the battery. With the tractor running at full rpm, generally the voltage should not exceed 7.5 for 6 volt systems or 15 for 12 volt. After you start your tractor, you need to run it long enough for the charging system to replace the power it took from the battery to start the tractor. After I have restarted my tractor several times for odd jobs, I put an automatic charger on it and get a full charge on the battery. I usually get 5-6 years out of a battery. Batteries like to be discharged and recharged, but if you let a discharged battery set it will "sulfate" and the battery will fail to accept a recharge.
