Positive Ground?

I just got a Farmall H and it has a red battery cable run to the starter button and the black cable is to ground. It has a generator. I hooked the cables to the battery red to positive and black to neg. The tractor started. My question is how do you tell if someone changed the tractor to neg. ground? The amp meter did not move either way it just wiggled a little. The cables are for 12 volt because they are smaller that the one from the starter button to the starter.
