Gene, to avoid the "bang", try holding the lever in the "start up" position until it decides to start, then move it all of the way forward. The start up position is obtained by moving the lever slightly forward to the point where the shaft would just start to turn. In this position, only 40 psi of oil pressure is being sent to the PTO clutch pack, allowing the PTO to be feathered.
