update:added a few ounces of hydraulic system cleaner(supposed to use it at 5% concentration)..ran it for a while..drained the system again and cleaned the large screen again, this time not too much sediment...refilled the touch control and added a few more ounces of cleaner(breaks up gum and varnish and keeps it suspended till you drain it and replenish with fresh fluid)...bled system and kept working levers back and forth..all of a sudden, the sickle mower was going up and down like gang busters ...have tried it several times since and works fine..glad to have it back working and the moral to the story is keep an eye on and change your hydraulic fluid periodically..thanks for all help and advice.
