Sounds to me like your detent piston o-ring is leaking. The piece you describe as a "screw on cap"- this is a large plug screwed into a short length of large pipe, and the pipe screws into the remote valve body, right? And the piece you describe as "pressed into the cap and 1/4" in diameter", if you pry it out and look inside, do you see what looks like a flat-headed screw head? If so, we're on the right track. To repair, disconnect the control lever from the spool at the front of the valve, next, unscrew the piece I describe as a short length of large pipe from the back of the valve. Now you can withdraw the spool and detent assembly from the valve body from the rear. Clamp it in a vise by the piece I describe as a short length of large pipe, and unscrew the large cap from the end. Keep the parts in order, and remove everything from the end of the spool. At this point you should be left with the spool and the detent body. Unscrew the adjusting screw from the detent body and remove the insides, being careful not to lose the balls. Now clamp the spool in the vise by the very end where the lever attaches, and using a punch as a handle, unscrew the detent body from the spool. You should now be able to remove the tiny detent piston. Get a new piston w/ o-ring from your Case-IH dealer, plus the two o-rings that seal the spool to the valve body, plus the o-ring that seals the detent body to the spool. Assembley is the reverse of removal, when you're done you'll need to adjust unlatching pressure, you'll need a 5000 psi guage for that. This job is much easier than I make it sound, but I haven't had one apart for a year. An I&T manual will really help you.
