.jpg, .gif, and .bmp images will all default display at 72dpi no matter what. You are correct that setting any higher will create a larger image. Think of it this way, if you scan a 3"x5" picture at 144dpi, the computer displays it at 72dpi no matter what so you scanned in 432X720 pixels which if you divide by 144 is 3x5 inches right? The computer reads that at 72dpi (no matter what) so it sees 432X720 divided by 72 or 6x10 inches. The lesson here is that especially if you intend to use these graphics on the web there is absolutely no point in scanning at a higher resolution than 72dpi. If you want to use them for print work go ahead and scan at higher, but plan on using a different file format like .psd.....
