Lenray the friction disk would have nothing to do with your float down, because you said have to hold lever up, if you hold the lever up it should not go down. So you have bad link inside or bad valve, or bad seal some place. Could be out of adjustment. You also said it will not hold load with engine of, I would but load on the lift arms and remove the third link plate with engine off and see if you see oil leaking inside, let engine off for some time to let the oil frain off that should be there. Let us know what you find.
