It was just the way it was done yours ago. It was belived that it made a differance on how things worked back then and since found it its no big deal to hook it the other way. Theres a more tecknical answer for it but, it would take a long post to explan. You can change it easy just be sure to polarize the genny if you do. If it has a genny that is if it has an alternator it almost has to be neg. ground.
