I had a tractor once that would not charge. I put the volt meter on the battery terminals and started the tractor. The reading was around 11 volts. At this point the voltage regulator points should be putting 12 or 13 volts to the batt. My reading did not go up. I left the meter on while I started closing and jumping points and switches one at a time, while watching the meter. As soon as I hit the problem which turned out to be regulator points the volt meter started to climb.and I could hear a slight change in the sound of the engine.{It takes hp to run the gen} I watched the meter charge to around 13+ volts and then the voltage reg shut off.Turning on all the lights dropped the voltage and at 12or so I could see by the meter that the reg kicked in. PS. My tractor gage was not working.
