The 350UD (owned by a Indiana neighbor) I often refer to had hydrostatic steering. There was no mechanical connection. There was a cylinder under the front of the engine moving the tie rods. This thing never wore out or had difficulty, nor did it leak. Could this system be crossed to the 300-350 gas???
