Not a patent "war" per se, just an unwillingness to pay the licensing fee to Harry Ferguson for use of the design. It was almost certainly on a per-tractor basis, and with 100,000's of tractors being produced, it would've cost IH a LOT of money to license the 3pt. It was probably cheaper to develop the fast hitch, and a matter of pride for sure.
