The originals were very poorly waterproofed and rusted to dust.
I like a single pole double throw switch rated at 20 amps @120 volts. The best is a waterproof toggle (available on line, or at a very good supply store)
The center terminal is connected to the supply wire, and the other two are connected to the center terminal of two bulbs.
