Most of Dad's alternator-equipped tractors are like that, including the ones that came from the factory with alternators ('56 and '66 series). Even the self-exciting (remember this is a PG rated forum, folks) single-wire alternator on the M is a little finicky; takes a quick blip of throttle to get it to start charging. I did the Hitachi conversion with idiot light on my H. Same thing.

It's been a matter of standard operating procedure to give the tractor a quick rev shortly after startup to get the alternator charging for 20-odd years for me... Guess I'm just used to it.
