This comes directly out of 1974 Motors repair manual. I have used this method for many years after a couple of engines I rebuilt had a water seepage on the head gasket. Had no problems with that problem since...

Cylinder Head Replace

Notes

Before installing cylinder head, wipe off engine block gasket surface
And be certain no foreign material has fallen into cylinder bores, bolt
holes or in the valve lifter area. It is good practice to clean out bolt
with compressed air.
Some cylinder head gaskets are coated the special lacquer to provide
a good seal once the parts have warmed up. Do not use any additional
sealer on such gaskets. If the gasket does not have this lacquer coating
apply suitable sealer to both sides

Tighten cylinder head bolts at a little at a time in three step in the
sequence shown in the illustration. Final tightening should be to the
torque specification listed in the engine tightening table. After the
bolts have been torqued to specifications, they should not be disturbed.

In instances where cylinder head gasket leakage is hard to control,
aluminum paint can be applied to the gasket as a sealer.

Spray one coat of the aluminum paint on both sides of the gasket
and allow the paint to dry. Then spray a second coat on both sides
and while the paint is still wet, install the gasket. Torque the head
and manifold bolts to specifications to complete job.
