diesel's had an emergency shutdown. This shuts off all the intake air. The engine would smoke like heck, but wouldn't start. There was a reset on the roots blower that had to be reset manually.

Cummins used an overspeed cutoff that was driven from the tach drive. If the engine speed exceeded the cutoff setting speed it would shutdown the engine. The overspeed cutoff had a
reset button so the engine could be restarted. Hal
