In my experience (YMMV), if the ring gear on the flywheel is showing serious wear then the new starter (or just starter drive gear) is not going to fix the problem. That requires splitting the tractor and replacing or flipping over the ring gear. To test the theory, (with the ignition off) manually turn the engine about 1/4 revolution so the starter will see a different spot on the ring gear and see if it binds when you try to start it then (it usually doesn't when you get past the bad spot). The idea is that your whole ring gear isn't bad, just the spots that the engine normally stops at (which for our inline 4's should be two spots 180degrees apart). Hope that helps, Stan(VA).
