If you can locate one of the new type starter drive, I would certainly do so. They have no exposed springs. When I made my change I had a new ring gear on my Super A. I had taken both SA and 130 starters to an auto electric rebuilder. After rebuilding I picked them up, didn't pay them much attention until I installed them. The starter with the old bendix would not work on either tractor. The other starter with the new starter drive would work well on both tractors. I called the rebuilder, told him my problem. He advised that he had the old bendix type in stock and the new type he oedered over from the CaseIH dealer in town. I said,"I think we best go to the caseIH dealer for another new type starter drive." The CaseIH partsman (Andy Waugh) advised me the new type was all he had been selling for close to 20 years, and he had them for all pre 1958 IH tractors. You find those new type drives and you will not need to split that tractor. Back in 92 yes my SA ring gear was new, but the 130 ring gear looked bad, it still looks bad. It has been starting well now for 13 years. The 130 is the one tractor I plow snow with, thus it goes year around. We see a few -F days around here also. Back where I lived 5 years ago -25F was quite commom. If you can't find a source for the new type starter drive E mail me. If Andy hasn't retired, (he shouldn't have he's younger than I am) I'll try and contact him. At least get a part number out of him.

Experimental Tractors Article - by Danny Bowes (Dsl). Tractor technology appears to have nearly hit it's pinnacle of development. If you agreed with the subtitle, you are rather mistaken. Quite, actually. As a matter of fact, some of the technology experimented with over 40 years ago makes today's tractor technology seem absolutely stale by comparison. Experimentation, from the most complex assembly to the most simple and mundane component, is as an integral a part of any farm tractor's development
