In the last few years i have torn down at least 10 of these type engines and not uncommon to find the ports where the coolant goes down by the sleeves and out the lower fitting plugged with junk sometimes even hard enough to have to bust it loose. Even adding a water pump would not have helped some of them. You can remove the radiator and lower fitting that the hose connects to and with air pressure and a long probe and water these nickle sized holes can be unplugged. Lets face it there is a lot of bad water out there.
