CNKS: My 560 had one keyway. I purchased a set of SM wheels for duals. All I had to do was change the cast clamps to clamps without key in them. Keyway on other side matched. I know of a situation whereby they ground keys out of clamp.

I'm wondering if two keyways didn't actually weaken the axle. When new our 300 came with wheels dished in but out to end of axle. The first week my dad had the tractor when new it sheared the keys out of one wheel. The dealer fixed this by having a matching keyway cut in wheel, then installed a key to fill both axle and wheel keyway. They never did replace keys on clamp. I urged my dad to change wheels so dished out at the time. I was only 13 at the time and who listens to a 13 year old. IH dealer was right in dad's opinion.

About 10 years later I was moving a building on skids, pulling with both 300 and 560. I put Canadian Ring Chains on 300 for better traction. When we were done I noticed the 300 had close to a 1/4 twist on one axle. While still straight and rigid it was split along bottom of keyways on both sides. I bought a parts tractor that had been in a fire and changed the axle. Changed wheels to dish out also. By the way that wheel with keyway cut in cast and large key to fill both keyways was on the 300 for at least 35 years, probably still there as tractor is still going.
