What keeps the thermostat in the pipe?

After replacing the water pump on my Super C I went looking for the thermostat. Found the pipe where I've been told it lives but other than a lovely rusty patina on the ledge, nobody was home. There is a groove half an inch or so above the ledge. Is it to hold the termostat disc in place? It seems rather far from the ledge for the purpose. Would allow the disc to beat around in there until it broke the snap-ring, wouldn't it? The shop manual doesn't say anything about it; must figure everyone knows all about it. Over my head... Fred
