War Time shifter Knob??

Hi There, I have a 1942 "H", and it has a hard rubber knob, which needs to be replaced. I would like to put a war time Cast Iron knob on my shifter, but was told it has to be threaded, is that true? Can I fix my shifter to accept a cast Iron knob, and is my tractor of war time? Then if my tractor is war time, does anyone know where I can get a cast iron shifting knob?? Thanks to all in advance for responding...
