Nat - Actually only the external dimensions of the M and MD block are the same. Internally they are very different (the MD has a heavier, 5 bearing crank in vs. a 3 bearing crank in the M, etc)

Regarding the H "factory diesel", most likely someone took a Continental diesel from a 350D and stuck it in an H. It would be a relatively straightforward engine swap.
