The 444 I referred to had a live PTO -- that I am sure of. Since it was used rather hard on a rototiller before I began to use it, I suppose that if it originally had a 2-stage clutch, it could have been replaced with a single stage one. Never thought of that. Our mechanic (and his boss) liked to save money. I doubt if the 444 ever had a transmission driven pto -- but I can't prove it, it was a 1969 model and the only one I ever paid any attention to. I imagine the 2444 was used by some highway depts for mowing -- I would think a live pto would be a requirement for that.
