The weight capacity of the 3pt, and the weight range of the bales can be determined. Round balers often have scales built in if they're newer. With older ones, the owner's manual might have a weight range listed, or you may know just from experience how heavy the bales tend to be. With the add-on 3pt, it's extremely easy because the manufacturers list the weight capacity for liability reasons. Basic math, if the weight of the bale plus bale spear is less than the capacity of the hitch, you can reasonably expect things to be okay. Of course, like old says, there's that matter of the front end coming off the ground... Add-on 3pt hitches stick way out in back of the tractor, giving the bale that much more leverage to tip things over and make life miserable. You'll probably need front end weight.
