big nut on m steering post

im in the process of taking apart my super m.and im stuck on the big nut at the steering post that connects to the steering rod that goes through the radiator.we heated it with little propane tanks but they wont get it hot enough and to bolt is halfway rounded off so we have to use a pipe wrench. would it hurt any of the gears in the post if we heated the nut with a cutting torche and got it glowing?
