I hate to bump heads with Ken but the SMTA was not offered with a low-low first gear. Nor was the 400-450. I presume the factory felt that the TA low range was sufficient. However, it is possible to fit a low-low on the SMTA using 560 parts. The 19 tooth first gear (countershaft) of the 560 replaced the former 21 tooth gear as found on the SMTA, 400, 450. I know all this from studying the parts books prior to installing the 560 gears in one of my SMTAs. I also installed the 560 rear end bevel gears and now have a very slow (and torquey) SMTA that I like very much.
