Farmall A-I final drives...help

I am tring to take apart the final drives on my A industrial. The problem I have is I can"t get the axle out. I have removed the bolts from seal retainer (behined the hub) and also removed the large bolt from the end of the axle that is behined the sheet metal cover. I also removed the odd looking retianer that slides over the axle. At this point the IH manual says drive the axle out. (Yeah right) I tried to drive it out with a brass drift and a hammer but with no luck. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help.
