In my area of eastern North Dakota a WD-9 or 600 or 650 would commonly pull 5-16's packer and pony drill in third gear. The WD-9 had a full load doing this but a neighbor had a 600 and he regularly pulled 5-16's packer and pony drill in fourth gear. Granted we had nice sandy loam soil. Thirty miles or so away the ground was much heavier and I have heard of WD-9's pulling three or four bottoms.
