dej(JED), First Please post some pics of it!. I need to see tank, and its fill valves. According to what presious little IH archives there are. And the info gleaned from old IH hands, I will give you the most commomly accepted dedscripition of a True SMTA-LP. There were 500 LPs commissioned by IH they were built to a point then shipped the tank company in Lubbock and San Angelo, Texas. When the truck got there and off loaded the tractors to be completed there, Then they would load up tanks and carbs anf back haul them to the factory, to be completed there. The most common tank is a longwise tank. (steering shaft goes through it/ not over) The fill/vapor valves are a mono valve set-up, it is located at the 11:oo position at the rear of the tank while looking at it as if you are in the drivers seat. Though I have seen one SMTA-LP with the Stage II crosswise tank...indivual fill/vapor/bleed valves face rearward. Most True LPs will have a different # suffix. If your tractor has an X1 suffix then it was probably a gasoline originally. S in the siffix means TA/w LPTO. D means 5000 ft altitude engine E means 2500 ft altitude engine. There are No known #s list. No known consecutive #s. So pics would be helpful for me to determine wheather you have a true one or not. IF it is a true one....DO NOT SCREW IT UP BY PUTTING IT ON GASOLINE! it is more valuable as an LP. Hollar back at me if i can be of help. My cell # is 512-577-3837. Later, John A.
