Mike,
Also be sure you have a good connection, cables and all with your battery. As the starter draws several amps from your battery supply, all cables and connections must be clean and tight. If the voltage at your starter drops too low, your starter wont kick hard enough to engage and may just spin. If you have a voltmeter, you can measure the voltage at the starter while someone is engaging the starter to see if the voltage drops way down under load. Be careful! Also, be sure you have a good well charged battery.
