Bob, I think you nailed it on the head about the field current. That is what is going to provide the excitation to the windings. I am not sure how the extra 50 (3650) rpms affect the voltage. For a 2-pole generator/motor 3600 rpm's will produce 60 Hz output. If you were able to obtain the schematic for the generator you might be able to perform a more in depth diagnotics. I have taken enough electrical theory classes between NucPower and college to be dangerous about this. Hopefully an experienced electrician type will jump in here. Randy
