I found quite a bit of sludge inside the valve cover of mine, but then it had been running without a thermostat so not surprising. The sludge on top is what promped me to open up the bottom end. There it was clean as a whistle, but when I put the pan back on it began leaking like a sieve at the front of the pan or bottom of the front cover - couldn't tell which! I sort of suspected that the 'crankshaft seal oil retainer palte' (6 100 D) which sort of 'floats' in there got disturbed so I pulled it out and used new seals/gaskets on it wilh a liberal amount of Permatex. So I'm anxious to get her running to see if the oil leak has gone away. I didn't leave the front cover loose 'till the crank pulley was in the seal because I used Permatex on that cover too. I don't think that cover can move around much anyway with the stud and all the bolts. Hope I got by with it. We'll see. I used a new crankshaft pulley as the old one had a crank ear broken off and the seal groove was pretty bad.
