What caused this engine slowdown?

Put a new thermostat in my 400D, and started it up on gas. Left it on gas for about 5 minutes, then noticed it starting to labor and slow down, so shut it down. Waited a few minutes, than started on gas again, left it there, and after 5 minutes it started to labor again and almost shut down, like it was pulling hard. I turned it off before that happened. Went up the the radiator, not knowing what the heck just happened and noticed it seemed real hot. Took off the cap and it was boiling inside. The head was hot. Said to myself, bad stat. Took it out. I must have been sold the wrong stat. It fit up in the housing just right, but after reading the instructions, found it needed to be installed with the pellet towards the engine. It will not fit that way. Like I said, it fit like a glove the wrong way. Put the old stat in and it worked like it should. Should have never got a new stat, but the old one looked like it had been through a war, so ---. My major concern is if I damaged something trapping the heat in the head with boiling water? What caused the engine laboring?
