An old welder told me once that the best way to weld cast iron is to: 1) Grind a v-groove in the crack, 2) Use Nickel rod (stick welder), 3) Weld a short length at a time (1/2" or so), and 4) Peen it with a small ball-peen hammer while it cools, 5) Continue this way until done.
The peening keeps the weld from shrinking and cracking again as it cools. This has worked well for me on several repair jobs.
