I see my question has wandered. Around here we refer to PTO's as live or ground driven. A live PTO is run independently of the transmission either by a 2-stage clutch(such as a Ford 961) or a second clutch activated by it's own lever(such as Oliver Row Crop 88). A ground driven PTO is driven off the transmission input shaft, hence the clutch must be engaged and the tractor moving or in neutral for the PTO to turn. My guess is that live and independent PTO's are the same and he just grabbed a wrong name in his reply to me.
