I think you are right on all points Mike. I too have changed rear end oil on recent acquisitions, and have always found that tractors stored outside have an exponential abount of water in the rear ends, as compared to their shedded counterparts. I can buy the idea of some of the total quantity coming from condensation...I mean after all, if you have the rear end up to operating temperature and then it sits outside to cool off...let"s face it, there is nothing air tight about the deck plate, shifter, pulley box, etc. I have often wondered about the recesses around the deck bolts being just a temporary swimming pool for water to end up in the rear end. I guess the bottom line is that 6 gallons of SAE 90 is relatively cheap. A change should always be in order. It"s good insurance and beats the alternative of major teardown and repair.
