super M power steering fluid

What type of fluid (and how much) should I use in the power steering reservoir for a 1953 super M? The power steering unit is probably an after-market add-on, because the cowling for the radiator has had about 1 inch cut out of it to make room for the pump. It looks like there are two openings (about 1 inch diameter bolts) that can be removed from the pump to add fluid (or to attach hydraulic hoses, I just don"t know). The pump is driven by a belt, just like the generator is. About 8 inches above the pump is a reservoir that looks like it would hold about a quart. There"s one hose that goes from the pump up to the power steering unit on the steering shaft, and one hose that goes from the power steering unit to the reservoir. The lid to the reservoir is "spring-loaded", so it keeps a valve inside closed. When I checked the fluid level in the reservoir the fluid was only about up to the height where the hose comes from the power steering unit. The power steering unit is attached right inbetween the temperature and oil pressure gauges, but under the hood. Can anybody tell me what make of unit this is, what should be the fluid level in the reservoir, and what type of fluid it takes? I"ve looked through the archives, but haven"t seen any mention of power steering fluid types. Thanks for reading this long message and passing on some advice! Ron in MD
