Glen, I agree with old n the others. If you use 12 volts on a 6 volt coil, the current is doubled causing it to run way too hot plus the increased current burns the points up very quickly. An external series voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor ahead of the coil will reduce the coils input voltage to 6 as it was designed for and cut the points and coil current in half to extend their life.
