Have you checked the connections of the primary hookups to the coil? The coil should have a plus & minus marked on the two primary terminals. If you have a negative ground system, the negative terminal should be connected to the distributor. If system is positive ground , the positive coil connection should be connected to the distributor. Worth a look.
