What is the serial # of your H. The real early production 1940 tractors had (I believe) castings that were the same as 1939 tractors. There may have been enough differences to cause issues.
If your new shaft is longer by .250", that is serious.
Im My opinion if you choose to try to use it determine first if the old gears fit the shaft, and/or new gears are identical in # of teeth size and offset if any.
Next determine where the length difference is located. (on one end would be optimal). If it is along the shaft, between gears, I would not use it. Position of gears is critical to their ability to transmit power, and that much missalignment is deadly.
